Is it too soon to start looking forward to our 200th episode?  It is when we have so much to get to in Episode 195 of Mail Order Zombie!  This time around, Brother D reviews the feature film release Operation: Nazi Zombies (dir. David B. Stewart III), as well as three more shorts from JABB pictures' The Collective, Vol. 5 (A (gore)aphobic, Consumption of the Heart, and Zombie Soup).  Miss Bren joins him to look at three more episodes of Season Two of The Walking Dead before lending her voice to help D review the zombie movie reference book Zombi Mexicano by Keith J. Rainville.  Silent Death takes us back to his bunker to review Metal and Ash by Jake Bible (when he isn't trying to school Brother D on who Michelle Ryan is or tell us what he continues to think about the television series Revolution), Jimmy and Eric from Galactic Gaming News have a special announcement, and Need-a-Nickname Scott has the news in the Zombie Beat.

We don't know where your zombies are, but we know where we keep ours - Episode 194 of Mail Order Zombie.  This time around, Brother D reviews the new zombie movie Cockneys vs Zombies (dir. Matthias Hoene) and then ropes Miss Bren into talking about [REC] 2 (dir. Jaume Balagueró, Paco Plaza) and The Bay (dir. Barry Levinson) . . . but not necessarily in that order - this episode of MOZ was recorded in the most random way possible with the Feedback Discussion being recorded with Bren and D Monday night, the Cockneys vs Zombies review Wednesday night, and the reviews of three short movies from The Collective Vol. 5 (Voice Over, They Said They Were Here to Help, and (se) XX_Z (ombie) sometime in between.  We've even lost track of when the review of the first three episodes of season two of The Walking Dead was recorded!  Jimmy and Eric from Galacic Gaming News seemed a bit more on the ball with their update on the latest in zombie video game news.

Brother D survived his triple-booked weekend and he's here in episode #193 of Mail Order Zombie to talk about it!  He attended the world premiere of I Heart Monster Movies (dir. Tyler Benjamin), went Howl Con (the first annual werewolf convention), and watched a handful of short movies at Zompire, the Undead Film Festival.  When he wasn't watching movies and hanging out with werewolf enthusiasts, he also reviewed the 2012 zombie movie Remains (dir. Colin Theys) and the Monster Pictures' compilation release Ultimate Zombie Feast.  Need-a-Nickname Scott brings the latest and greatest in zombie news with his Zombie Beat, while Jimmy and Eric from Galactic Gaming News has zombie video game news.  Throughout this episode, you'll hear the entries from the listeners trying to win the drawing for the book The Cabin in the Woods: The Official Visual Companion, and, of course, Miss Bren will help round out the show in the Feedback Discussion.  Other things to listen for in this episode: a list of important werewolf films throughout the history of cinema, a zombie . . . er . . . living impaired running for political office, an Easter Egg, some real talk about RA, and the startling revelation that there might be something out there that makes Brother D feel pretty.

Mail Order Zombie #192 - The Cabin in the Woods & Looking ahead to Zompire

Download Mail Order Zombie #192 here!

After YEARS of being completely honest with the podosphere at large about his feelings regarding Joss Whedon, Brother D FINALLY watched The Cabin in the Woods (dir. Drew Goddard).  Does it change his world?  Does it make him a Whedonite?  Does Miss Bren join him in watching the movie?  You'll have to listen to Episode 192 of Mail Order Zombie to find out.  When he wasn't watching The Cabin in the Woods, D interviewed Gwen Callahan, one of the forces behind this year's Zompire vs. The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival (October 12-14).  During the interview, you'll find out what movies are playing that weekend and which movie will be turned into a drinking game.  We return to Silent Death's Bunker for further thoughts about the television series "Revolution" (and a theory behind why Milla Jovovich won't return Need-a-Nickname Scott's phone calls); Jimmy and Eric from Galactic Gaming News give us the latest in zombie videogame news; we read some emails and listen to a voicemail in the Feedback Discussion; and there's a contest announced SOMEWHERE in this episode . . . but telling you where or when would be spoiling the surprise.  While this is a SPOILER-heavy episode, we aren't going to spoil THAT!

Zompire: The Undead Film Festival Rises from the Grave!

The organizers of Portland’s own H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival are resurrecting the beloved Zompire: The Undead Film Festival, dedicated to highlighting various filmmakers’ creative attempts to show the undead in new and unexpected ways.

Join us on October 13-14th at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St, Portland, OR) for a special two night ‘Zompire VS The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival’ event, featuring fright flicks to get your Halloween season off to a great start! Get an early start at our no cover pre-party on Friday, October 12th at 11 pm at The Lovecraft Bar, Portland’s own horror-themed watering hole. Mingle with other horror film enthusiasts over drinks and a few selected short films.

On Saturday, October 13th, at 6 pm, we’ll be showcasing independent zombie and vampire short films, such as the award winning “Threnody” by female genre filmmaker Tyrrell Shaffner, “You are So Undead” by Alex Epstein (head writer for Charlie Jade), “Dead Friends” by Stephen W. Martin, “Blue Hole” by Erik Gardner, and many more. At 9 pm, attendees are encouraged to participate in our first annual Undead Costume Contest with special Guest Judges the Living Dead Girls and Eraserhead Press. Prizes include swag generously donated by The Lovecraft Bar, Liv Rainey-Smith, The HPLHS, and Sigh Co. Graphics. Saturday night’s revelries culminate with a special presentation of the 80’s classic vampire tale “The Lost Boys.”

On Sunday, October 14th, at 6 pm, we’ll be showing shorts and features adapted from or inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, as a preview of the 18th Annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, scheduled for next May. Sunday’s films will feature the Portland premiere of “The Evil Clergyman,” starring Lovecraft film veterans Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, and the late David Gale. Previously unreleased, a rough cut preview was shown at the last HPLFF, and now audiences will have a chance to see this lost gem in its entire restored glory!

New Lovecraftian feature “The Thing on the Doorstep” will make its Portland debut, along with independent shorts from around the world including “The Shunned House” from Seattle’s Maelstrom Productions, “Odokuro” by Aurelio Voltaire, narrated by Gary Numan, and “The Captured Bird” (Best Short Film Fant-Asia Film Festival) by Jovanka Vuckovic, former editor-in-chief Rue Morgue magazine.

For more films and schedule info visit http://zompire.com.
Tickets are available at http://zompire.brownpapertickets.com/
Advance weekend passes are $20. Advance single night passes are $12. Prices will be slightly higher at the door.

Miss Bren returns to Mail Order Zombie in Episode 191!  She joins Brother D for the voicemails and emails that have been building up since her absence last week, but before we get to the Feedback Discussion, we have some movie reviews to work through.  Brother D considers placing the blame for his zombie movie addiction on Uncle Romero when he takes a look at 2012's Blaming George Romero (dir. Robert Lise), and MOZ Family Members Silent Death and Need-a-Nickname Scott submit separate reviews of Milla Jovovich's latest go-round with the Umbrella Corporation in Resident Evil: Retribution (dir. Paul W. S. Anderson).  The winners of the Strippers vs. Werewolves Blu-ray contest are announced, Brother D runs out of breath talking about several upcoming zombie-centric (and werewolf-centric?) events happening in the next few weeks, Scott drops the latest and greatest in zombie news, somebody special celebrates a special anniversary, and we have an interview with editor James Beach and author William F. Nolan.

Even though Brother D spent the last weekend at the Rose City Comic-Con, zombies weren't far from his mind.  When he wasn't interviewing comics creators Chris Kohler and Mark Ledford, or chatting with transmedia creator Steve Coker, he watched and reviewed the 2012 short movie Zombie Proof (dir. Ben Lambeth) and the 1964 and/or 1970 film I Eat Your Skin (dir. Del Tenney).  And when he's not at the convention and he's not watching zombie movies, D has an announcement or two to make about some upcoming October events.  After the Feedback Discussion, the show drops in on the Rose City Comic-Con panel Dex Dixon, Paranormal Dick: Concept to Creation and Beyond.

The line between zombie and vampire wears thin on Episode 189 of Mail Order Zombie when Brother D takes a look at movies like The Living Dead Girl (dir. Jean Rollin) and The Velvet Vampire (dir. Stephanie Rothman).  Don't worry - while Mail Order Vampire may make a return appearance at some point, Brother D isn't going all bloodsucker on the MOZ Family; the review of The Velvet Vampire is part of this week's Palette Cleanser along with the second half of the review of The Collective, Vol. 4.  On the straight-up zombie front, D reviews Zombie A-Hole (dir. Dustin Mills), and he's joined by Miss Bren, Need-a-Nickname Scott, (Missing-a-Moniker) Tracey and other members of the Mail Order Zombie Family to talk about ParaNorman (dir. Chris Butler, Sam Fell).  The Feedback Discussion is at the end of the episode, and the Zombie Beat is at the beginning of the episode after a rambling show introduction in which Brother D announces a contest, talks briefly about an upcoming comic book convention, talks about the Facebook page, and sends a special shout-out to any podcasters based in the Pacific Northwest.

Wayne Kotke a politician?  Richard from Wichita a reviewer?  The Umbrella Corporation cares?  What madness is this?  Listen to Mail Order Zombie #188 to find out.  In this episode of MOZ, in addition to Wayne, Richard and the Umbrella Corporation speaking up-and-out, Brother D reviews the 2012 movie Humans Versus Zombies (dir. Brian T. Jaynes) and the upcoming movie Desolation (dir. Chris Dillon).  He also begins his review of the latest collection from JABB pictures with Part One of his review of The Collective V.4.  Last week, D was interviewed by Dr. Gangrene on the Metal Morgue Segment of the 6'+ podcast, and during that interview, he turned the tables on the good doctor to ask a question of his own for the MOZ Family, and The Umbrella Corporation has a very important public service announcement in this week's episode.  Miss Bren joins the show for the Feedback Discussion with even more Wayne Kotke, some guest reviews from Richard from Wichita and other emails and voicemails from the listeners.

One of the best parts of producing Mail Order Zombie is all the discoveries I make along the way, and in producing Mail Order Zombie #187, I discovered the phrase, "I'm a sandwich, you're my bacon."  Before getting to that point, though, we review the movies Zombie on the Loose (dir. Conrad Brooks) and Cost of the Living: A Rom Zom Com (dir. Daniel Lee White).  Silent Death reports from his bunker with a joint review of the films [REC] 2 (dir. Jaume Balagueró, Paco Plaza) and Quarantine 2 (dir. John Pogue) and Zombie Anarchist sits down with an interview with Scott Hill from Flying Frog Productions (makers of the excellent game Last Night on Earth).  Miss Bren ALMOST gets a taste of some post-apocalyptic excitement at the beginning and at the end of the show.

I'm a sandwich.  You're my bacon.

Brother D takes a short movie-watching-and-reviewing break in Episode 186 of Mail Order Zombie, but that leaves room for a book review from Silent Death when he visits Dust by Joan Frances Turner.  Need-a-Nickname Scott dips his toes into the news with the Zombie Beat, Don Coscarelli tells us a bit about John Dies at the End and we go back to Crypticon Seattle for the panel "Zombies Can’t Run & Vampires Don’t Sparkle: The Psychology of Why We Argue Over What Fictional Things Can Or Can’t Do" with Eloise J. Knapp, Chris Saint, Steve Holetz, and Michael Montoure (with Brother D moderating).  Miss Bren does her best to keep everyone on track during the Feedback Discussion, and the band H2Awesome! swings by with the song "Carl, Stay in the House."

185 episodes into the podcast, and we're FINALLY talking about some Full Moon movies on Mail Order Zombie!  Brother D takes a look at two recent Full Moon releases: The Dead Want Women (dir. Charles Band) and Zombies vs. Strippers (dir. Alex Nicolaou).  D is still haunted by the ghosts of Crypticon Seattle, and to purge those demons, he shares with the MOZ Family interviews with zombie authors Craig DiLouie, Nate D. Burleigh and Lyle Perez-Tinics.  (They're zombie authors in that they write about zombies.  They're not zombies who write . . . at least, not yet.)  And at the end of the show, Miss Bren takes her familiar position as the person who keeps Brother D on track during the Feedback Discussion.

The American Civil War and World War II?  Just add zombies!  This time around, Brother D takes a look at the movies Exit Humanity (dir. John Geddes) and War of the Dead (dir. Marko Mäkilaakso).  The Crypticon coverage continues with mini-interviews with authors Eloise J. Knapp, Peter Clines, and Scott M. Exit Humanity coming to DVD 6/19/12

In the aftermath of the Civil War an unexplained outbreak of the walking dead claims the life of Edward Young’s wife while his son disappears. This sets him off on a harrowing journey into the plagued countryside. Facing off challenges not just from the ferocious undead but also from the living, will Edward (played by Mark Gibson) find an exit to the grotesque caricature of what humanity has become? The War might be over but the fight has just begun.

I'm REALLY looking forward to Exit Humanity (dir. John Geddes) for a few reasons -
  1. Stephen McHattie makes his return to zombie cinema in Exit Humanity. His Dead Letter Award nominated turn in 2008's Pontypool was one of the standouts of that year's crop of zombie films, and I'm eager to see what he does in this film.
  2. Three words - Bill Freakin' Moseley.
  3. I'm a sucker for good zombie stories set during the Civil War.

I'll be reviewing Exit Humanity on this week's episode of Mail Order Zombie, and we have a copy of the Region-1 DVD to give away to a lucky listener! We'll select the winner randomly, and to enter, all you have to do is email your name and address to us at MailOrderZombie@gmail.com by 6/20/12. Good luck!

Four score and a freakshow ago, Mail Order Zombie brought forth two more zombie movie reviews in Episode 183 of Mail Order Zombie.  Brother D visits the sideshow when he reviews Freakshow Apocalypse: The Unholy Sideshow (dir. Matthew Broomfield), then revisits one of his favorite sub-sub-sub-genres: zombie Civil War stores with a review of Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies (dir. Richard Schenkman).  There's more than movie reviews in this MOZ episode, though.  Markus Taylor, the man behind the zombie known as Cheese from the zombie movie DeadHeads (dir. Brett Pierce & Drew T. Pierce), drops by for an interview about his work in DeadHeads, his other projects and the upcoming DeadHeads Cheese prequel.  Devil Dinosaur, Jr., from the Dread Media podcast gives us a review of the novel Ladies Night by Jack Ketchum.  And we start our recounting Seattle Crypticon 2012 when we chat with writers Gareth Wood and Jessica Meigs.  After the Feedback with Miss Bren (which includes a very special announcement!), we have a recording of the panel "Zombies: Why the F@!$ Won't They Die?!" with panelists John Skipp (moderator), Scott Baker, Craig DiLouie, Gareth Wood, Derek M. Koch, Rick Reeves, Mark Rahner.

Earlier this month, Brother D spent three days in a row at Portland's Hollywood Theatre and managed to keep his sanity in tact at the Lovecraft Film Festival and went back to the theater the very next day for a screening of Juan de los Muertos, aka Juan of the Dead (dir. Alejandro Brugués), with Tequila Matt.  After four days at the Hollywood, he needed the MOZ Family's help in picking another movie to review this episode.  Will he take the advice of the Mail Order Zombie Family?  While D was spending every waking moment at the Hollywood, and watching the second half of JABB pictures' The Collective, Volume 3, Silent Death reviewed the novel The New Zed Order: Survive by author Todd Sprague.  Need-a-Nickname Scott returns with the Zombie Beat, and Miss Bren does her best to keep her husband from offending too many listeners north of the border.

Brother D is on pins and non-Euclidean needles as he looks forward to this weekend's H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival & Cthulhu Con, but he's not so distracted that he can't put together Episode 181 of Mail Order Zombie! This time around, he takes a look at the 2012 zombie movie release The Terror Experiment (dir. George Mendeluk). This episode also features Part One of a two-part review of JABB pictures' latest anthology release The Collective, Volume 3. The Mail Order Zombie offers up some reviews of their own when Silent Death reviews the videogame The Walking Dead from Telltale Games, and a review of the Mira Grant's novel Feed comes from Eradication H. In addition to the Lovecraft Film Festival, Brother D will also be attending Crypticon Seattle this month where he'll be a panelist, so he talks about that as well before Miss Bren joins him for this episode's Feedback Discussion. (Brother D would like to formally apologize to the Lifetime television network. He's not entirely sure why, but he feels that he must.)

Another episode of Mail Order Zombie, another movie review . . . and a film festival . . . and revisiting two movies we've already talked about on the show before!  Brother D checks out the rampaging 1980 movie Nightmare City (dir. Umberto Lenzi), and Need-a-Nickname Scott can finally check watching Helldriver (dir. Yoshihiro Nishimura) off his bucket list by checking out the Blu-ray at MOZ Central.  Also, D and Scott crammed into the MOZ-Mobile with Miss Bren and Missing-a-Moniker Tracey and drove to the Evergreen State last weekend to check out the 2012 BoneBat Comedy of Horrors Film Festival where at least one of them rewatched DeadHeads (dir. Brett Pierce and Drew T. Mail Order Zombie . . . now with TIMECODES! The dust has finally settled after the Dead Letter Awards and we finally washed the vampire smell out of the carpet from last week's Mail Order Vampire fun, it's time to get back to business here at Mail Order Zombie. In Episode #179, we're packing in the reviews when Brother D takes a look at Blood Splatter: A Guide to Cinematic Zombie Violence, Gore and Special Effects by Craig W. Chenery while Silent Death reviews Jake Bible's Dead Letter Award-nominated novel The Americans. On the movie-front, Miss Bren gets dystopian on Brother D with some talk about The Hunger Games (dir. Gary Ross), D reviews the upcoming zombie film Pretty Dead (dir. Benjamin Wilkins), and we use the documentary Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel (dir. Food poisoning, head colds, rheumatoid arthritis . . . it's going to take a lot more than that to stop Mail Order Zombie! Michael Maruska). (With a name like Zombedy, it HAS to be a zombie comedy, right?) Silent Death is back with another book review when he takes a look at Cherie Priest's flavored-with-zombies steampunk novel Boneshaker, and Dr. J & KK return for the first time since the MOZ hiatus with a new installment of Med of the Dead. At the end of the show, Bren and D tackle a minimum of Feedback before hitting 'STOP' on the recording program and crawling back into bed.

In this episode of Mail Order Zombie, Brother D talks about a zombie movie that's been on his radar since he first heard about it in 2010, but since it has such an innocuous name like The Dead (dir. Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford), it was difficult to find much information about it online before it was released in the UK last year. It hits DVD and Blu-ray in the US this month, and you'll have to listen to Episode #174 to hear if the movie lives up to D's expectations! This episode also features the first of MOZ's occasional Palette Cleansers in which D walks the MOZ Family through JABB pictures' The Collective Vol. 2. After the Feedback at the end of the show with Miss Bren, D takes some inspiration from a recent episode of Outside the Cinema and presents his Top Six List of Zombie Movies That Would Make Awesome Video Games.

RIP Bill Hinzman

Download RIP Bill Hinzman here.

It could be argued that Bill Hinzman's performance in the original Night of the Living Dead created the zombie archetype that would define our favorite movie monster for over forty years. In March 2011, he appeared on Mail Order Zombie for an interview supporting his then-latest movie River of Darkness, and during the interview Brother D and Mr. Hinzman couldn't leave the zombies alone.

Mr. Bill Hinzman passed away February 5, 2011. Thank you for your contribution to this dark and spooky corner of moviedom, Mr. Hinzman. RIP.

(There will be a regularly scheduled episode of Mail Order Zombie later this week on Thursday, 2/9/12.)

US Theatrical Release Rights for 'Juan of the Dead'

Outsider Pictures announced January 27, 2012, the acquisition of the international hit Juan of The Dead, from Guadalajara-based international film sales and distribution company Latinofusion, for US theatrical distribution in the United States.

The deal was announced via the Industry Office of the 29th annual Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), produced and presented by Miami Dade College (MDC). As previously announced, Juan of the Dead will be screened as part of MIFF’s Gala series at the upcoming Festival, March 2 – 11, 2012, and will be the first theatrical screening of the film under the Outsider Pictures banner. Director Alejandro Brugués, actor Alexis Díaz de Villegas, and Outsider Pictures and Latinofusion executives are scheduled to attend the screening.

“It’s a satirical look at the present day streets of the controversial regime and we’re excited to add it to our diverse catalogue of films.” said Paul Hudson, co-founder of Outsider Pictures. “And it’s a great zombie film, too!”

As previously announced, Focus World, the unique digital distribution initiative owned and operated by Focus Features, will release the movie later in 2012 to EST, iVOD and VOD, along with DVD and other formats.

After zombies take over Havana, Juan (Díaz de Villegas) and his friends decide to conquer the marauding undead, reported by the government as being unruly Americans continuing their quest of undermining the regime. Part comedy and part political allegory, Alejandro Brugués’ second feature was co-produced with Spain’s La Zanfoña Producciones. Brugués’ first feature Personal Belongings was in MIFF’s Ibero-American competition in 2008.

Outsider Pictures will open the film theatrically in Miami soon after the Festival, in an exclusive run at MDC’s Tower Theater. Hudson negotiated the deal with Latinfusion CEO Alfredo Calvino.

You can take the zombie movie podcaster out of the podcaster, but you can't take the zombie movies out of his DVD player. Brother D is BACK with Mail Order Zombie, and he's picking up right where he left off with Episode #173. He rocks a double feature of rockin' zombie movies - 1985's Hard Rock Zombies (dir. Krishna Shah) and 2011's Pop Punk Zombies (dir. Steve Dayton). Other old MOZ friends (like Need-a-Nickname Scott, Wayne Kotke and Professor Chad) stop by to catch up with the Family, and Miss Bren joins Brother D at the end of the show to go over some recent feedback. Welcome back, everyone . . . keep on, shamblin'!
